    • Your References list should start on a new page.
    • Alphabetize your reference list by the first word of the citation (usually the author's last name).
    • Double space all of the citations on your reference page.
    • Indent the second & following lines of the citation 0.5 inches.
    • 2 authors: Wingert, P., & Smith, J.
    • 3-7 authors: Wingert, P., Smith, J., & Brown, P.
    • 8 or more authors: Provide the name of the first six authors followed by an ellipsis (...) and the last author's name. There should be no more than 7 authors listed! For example: Wingert, P., Smith, J., Brown, P., Little, S., Jones, A., Stuart, A.,...Harris, M.
    • Only capitalize the first word of the document title. If there is a colon in the title, capitalize the first word after the colon.
    • Italicize the title of the magazine or journal. Also italicize the volume number—but do not italicize the issue number.
    • Vol., issue, and pages may not always be available on Internet sources. If they are not used, the name of the journal is all that can be provided in the reference list.
    • No Date: Use n.d. (no date) when a publication date is not available.
    • URL: Break a URL that goes to another line after a slash or before a period.

See this page for more help with APA format from the Butler libraries.

Citing Articles on your References Page in APA

Articles from Databases: In general, when you cite an article from a database, the format is the same as for a print article. At the end of the citation include the DOI (digital object identifier - a unique code for the article)number to indicate an online article. If there is no DOI number assigned to the article, give the URL of the journal, magazine, or newspaper home page. Generally speaking, you'll need to do a Google search to find the periodical's home page.
