How much do they know about your subject? How detailed will your explanation need to be? If you are writing a paper in your Biology class about the causes of the common cold, you probably don’t need to explain the difference between a viral infection and a bacterial infection, but if you are writing for a general audience, that information might be necessary. Consider your evidence and examples as well. While a general audience might be thrown off by a detailed micro-biological explanation with citations from medical journals filled with complex jargon, this type of support would be essential for an essay written in the Health Sciences. As always, your specific audience will dictate your content.
