    Module II: Clothing

    模块二:服装

Scenario 2.1: A mom asks her daughter if she has packed clothes for her field trip.

    D:

    装好了,我带了两件毛衣和一件羽绒服。

    雨衣带了吗?

    啊,我忘了。

    衣服

    yīfú

    clothes

    zhuāng

    dài

    to bring

    jiàn

    [M] for clothes

    毛衣

    羽绒服

    yǔróngfú

    down coat

    雨衣

    yǔyī

    rain coat

    wàng

    to forget

    Note:

了 plays multiple roles in Chinese sentences. Sometimes 了occurs at the end of the sentence to indicate a “change” status; other times 了 is attached to an action verb to indicate completed action. In this structure, there is often a number phrase or a specifier that follows the action verb. Compare:

你的衣服装好了。 (At the end, indicating a “change” status)

(lit. “Your clothes are all packed well now.”)

我带了两件毛衣。(Attached to the verb, indicating a “complete” action)

(lit. “I have packed two sweaters.”)

Scenario 2.2: An Dawei and Li Ming talk about their favorite colors for clothes.

    AD:

    LM:

    平时

    píngshí

    normally

    不常

    bùcháng

    infrequently

    Note:

的is a particle that indicates that what precedes it describes or modifies/specifies what follows it. The pattern is:

Descriptive Phrase + Particle + Noun

    什么颜色 的 衣服

    (lit. “what color’s clothes”)

    More examples:

    你买的衣服都很好看。

(lit. “The clothes that you bought are all good-looking.”)

    她想去的地方不在美国。

(lit. “The place where she wants to go is not located in the US.”)
