The prepositions por and para are very common in Spanish and, in some cases, both correspond to English "for". In general, para indicates destination, purpose or goal; por indicates cause and means through which an end is reached. The following is a summary of their main uses.

    A. Direction toward a destination or goal.

    B. Propósito, finalidad o destinatario:
Necesitas llantas para la nieve. (propósito)
Viajo para visitar a mi prima. (finalidad)
Era una película para niños. (destinatario)
    ¿Para quién es este paquete?
    Había comida para todos.
    Trabajan para la ONU.

    B. Purpose, goal or destination toward a recipient.
You need snow tires (designed for the snow). (purpose)
I'm traveling (in order) to visit my cousin. (goal)
It was a movie for children. (recipient)

    C. Time limit, due date or deadline.
The report is due (by) Monday.

The article needs to be done by the end of the month.
    We'll be home by then.

Soy abogado.
La vida es valiosa para cualquiera.

    D. Comparison to normal expectation; opinion, point of view.
S/he's doing quite well for a novice.

It has a large population for such a small country.
    Math is easy for you.
To me, laws are important. I'm a lawyer.
    Life is valuable to anyone.

♦ Use para in Spanish if you have the option to use in order to in English. For example:
I do it (in order) to have fun.
I do it (in order) to improve.
(in order) To improve, people have to do this.

BUT: It's easy to improve this.

(you couldn’t insert “in order to” here).
    Lo hago para divertirme.
    Lo hago para mejorar.
Para mejorar, hay que hacer esto.
PERO: Es fácil Ø mejorar esto.

    Contrastes

    para se refiere al objetivo final (destino, propósito, finalidad);
The use of these prepositions can be summarized as follows:
    para refers to the final goal (destination, purpose, end);
por refers to the initial motive (cause, reason), and the means and trajectory.
    Dallas-Santiago.png
The following questions can be useful in choosing the appropriate preposition:
    • ¿para qué? (what for? for what purpose or goal? in order to do what?)
    • ¿por qué? (why? for what reason or motive? because of what?)
    • ¿para dónde? (where to? what is the final destination?)
    • ¿por dónde? (through where? what is the trajectory or general zone?)
    • ¿para quién? (for whom? who is the recipient?)
    • ¿por quién? (by whom? for whose sake? who is the agent or motive?)
In many cases, both prepositions are grammatically correct, but convey different meanings:
I'm going toward the house (goal or destination).
I'm going through the house (roaming the house or passing through).
I'm doing this for (to give it to) María (she's the recipient).
I'm doing this because of María (for her sake; she needs or wants me to).
He got money for the research (in order to do it).
He got money from the research (exchange: got paid after doing it).
