We are starting at the beginning of the research process and the first of the Seven Pillars of Information Literacy- Identify.
You use this skill when you’re preparing to write your research assignment. Just like a non-researched paper, you need to understand what your instructor wants and to think about your rhetorical situation.
- Read and understand the assignment. Note the deadlines and requirements. Make sure you understand what genre you are using as that determines your organization. Ask questions. Do not assume you know.
- Determine your audience and purpose. They determine other choices you make such as tone and style. Keep your audience and purpose in mind as you write.
- Find your topic. If you are assigned a topic, try to find an aspect that interests you. If you have some choice in topic, choose something that intrigues you but you know little about. You will have more interest in the topic, so you will be more motivated to learn more. Plus, you will get to expand your knowledge and strengthen your critical thinking skills.
