Tienen una discusión sobre el nombre de un presidente de Francia de los años ochenta. Irene no sabe la respuesta, pero hay un ambiente muy divertido. Pablo, el primo de Marcela pregunta a Irene:
- ¿Dónde está Marcela? ¿Qué pasa?
- Es mejor que ella te cuente - responde Irene.
Pablo le da las gracias por la invitación y se despide. Es un buen chico. Irene está enfadada por no verlo más, pero no pueden ser amigos, ¿no? No es lógico.
- Are you alright? - pregunta Keilani a Irene.
- Yep! I’ll tell you everything about it tomorrow. But right now I need to think about something else, and discussing French presidents’ names sounds like a great way of doing exactly that.
- Cool! Also, I saved you the last truffle. It’s the dark chocolate one with pecan nuts!
- Thanks! You are so funny with that crazy love of yours for chocolate!
Las dos amigas se ríen. Irene está emocionada por tener nuevos amigos y un apartamento tan agradable y acogedor.
Principios de diciembre
Irene y Keilani viven desde hace meses en 8th and Wake y están muy contentas con sus compañeros. Les gustan sus clases y ahora hacen mucho ejercicio. Irene está en un equipo de fútbol femenino en UC Davis. Es una manera muy divertida de conocer gente nueva. Irene está como en casa. Le gusta mucho su vida en Davis, pero extraña a su familia, a sus amigos y la Navidad en España. Sus compañeros van a quedarse durante las fiestas y van a hacer una celebración multicultural grande, con mucha comida y tradiciones de diferentes países.
24 de diciembre
Irene hace la lista de la compra con Keilani y se prepara para salir al supermercado. ¡Esta noche va a ser una cena increíble! Rollitos de primavera, pad thai, gnocchis a la gorgonzola, tarta de chocolate, sangría… Cada uno va a cocinar su plato favorito.
Cuando abren la puerta encuentran dos sobres encima del felpudo. En uno de los sobres está escrito el nombre de Irene y en el otro el de Keilani. En cada sobre hay cien dólares.
- ¡Qué raro! - exclaman las dos amigas.
Nochevieja 15
Irene les explica a sus compañeros que en España la gente come doce uvas antes de las doce de la noche del treinta y uno de diciembre. Para comerlas al mismo tiempo en todo el país, todos los españoles escuchan las doce campanadas 16 en la televisión o en la radio. Irene llama a su familia por WhatsApp a las doce menos diez, hora española.
Primera campanada: ¡Vamos allá! - dice la abuela de Irene por el teléfono.
Segunda campanada: Ok, this seems easy enough... - piensa Wang.
Tercera campanada: Hmmm… no he terminado de comer la primera uva… - dice Penélope.
Cuarta campanada: Why do I have three grapes in my mouth already? Shouldn’t we have enough time to eat them one by one? - piensa Jake.
Quinta campanada: How am I gonna stuff another eight grapes in my mouth after this? - Wang está agobiado.
Sexta campanada: La abuela de Irene grita: ¡Yo ya no tengo edad para estas cosas!
Séptima campanada: Wang exclama: I’m following Grandma’s lead. I’m done. This is crazy!
Octava campanada: Irene tiene la boca llena: ¡Vamos, ya casi estamos!
Novena campanada: Vuelve la abuela y dice: ¡Ya solo quedan tres!
Décima campanada: I feel like a hamster right now! - piensa Keilani.
Undécima campanada: La abuela: ¡Voy a abrir la botella de cava, eh!
Duodécima campanada: Jake come la última uva y exclama: Seriously, Irene, do you do this every single year? It’s torture!
Irene se ríe mucho y traduce el comentario para su familia. Cuando termina la llamada Irene está triste y sale a tomar un café en Peets. Otra vez hay sobres para Keilani y para ella y hay cien dólares…
Picnic Day
Irene y Keilani están muy intrigadas por este famoso Picnic Day. ¡Todo el mundo dice que es A big deal around here!
Quedan con Clara, una amiga un poco pija de Keilani que también es su profesora de yoga. Es una chica muy simpática, pero le gustan mucho los chismes 17. Hoy les va a presentar a su compañero de apartamento, Gabriel, que es encantador (blink blink!). Irene sabe que es un blind date y piensa: ¡Yo no quiero un novio!
Al salir de casa, Keilani e Irene ven dos sobres con cien dólares. Las dos se miran y se ríen. Ya tienen diez sobres y les gusta recibirlos. Esta vez, hay una nota:
<<Siento ser una mala amiga. No puedo los mil dólares del depósito de una vez, pero quiero pagar. No espero ser amigas de nuevo, pero quiero hacer lo correcto.

Keilani e Irene están emocionadas por el gesto de Marcela.
- I was sure she wasn’t that bad! - le dice Keilani a Irene.
- But I’m still surprised she did it.
- Should we try and talk to her to see how she is doing?
- I don’t think I’m ready yet for that, but let’s decide later. For now, I just want to make sure that we arrive on time for the concert. Bomba Fried Rice! They are so cool! I love their vibe! - dice Irene.
Cuando llegan al quad, ven a Clara y a Gabriel. Se sientan en el césped y disfrutan de la música. Por la noche se van todos a cenar a Burger’s and Brew. Irene pide la hamburguesa con bacon y jalapeño, su favorita Cuando terminan de comer, Gabriel se acerca a Irene y le dice:
- Clara dice que tú también tienes sobres de cien dólares. Cada vez que paso por delante de E Street me río. ¿Cómo nos pudieron estafar tan fácilmente?
Los dos se ríen y cuentan todas las anécdotas sobre la estafa. Al final de la noche, Gabriel acompaña a Irene hasta su casa y cuando se dicen adiós, le pregunta:
- Do you want to do this again sometime soon?
E Irene le responde:
¡Pues claro!
