Marcela enseña a Irene las fotos que han mandado los estafadores.

¡Ay, no! ¡Ese es el apartamento! Es verdad que estafan a los estudiantes sin muchos recursos. ¡No lo puedo creer! – dice Irene con lágrimas.

Irene llora desconsolada, pero Marcela la calma.

También piden mil ochocientos dólares de depósito. ¿Qué tal si voy mañana a hablar con ellos? Ahora vamos a dormir. Tienes que estar tranquila, Irene. Todo va a estar bien. Mañana vemos cómo solucionamos esta situación - dice Marcela.

Empiezan las clases

Irene se despierta temprano. Está nerviosa como en la aduana. De momento se queda con Marcela, pero no sabe si va a encontrar un apartamento más barato en tan poco tiempo. ¿Va a poder continuar en Davis? ¿Va a tener que regresar a España? Irene está triste, pero agradecida por tener a su amiga Marcela.

Irene también está emocionada por su primer día de clases. Se monta en su bicicleta y va por la calle Russell Blvd para llegar al campus.

Al llegar a Olson, Irene aparca su bicicleta frente al edificio. Una chica le dice desesperada: I have no idea what I am going to do! I don’t want to lose my bike as well! La chica no tiene candado para su bicicleta e Irene la ayuda.

If you want we can both park our bikes together with my bike lock. That way you don’t have to worry about anyone taking it while we are in class.
Thank you so much, what a relief. I am so concerned right now. I was just defrauded out of an apartment off of E Street. I can’t risk losing my bike as well! - dice la chica.

Irene está en shock cuando escucha que la chica es víctima de la misma estafa. Irene mira el reloj y ve que ya son las nueve menos cinco. Quiere hablar más con ella, pero no quiere llegar tarde a su primera clase.

What is your name? – pregunta Irene.
Keilani - dice ella.
I am Irene. We have to get to class, it 's already almost 9:00 am.

Keilani y ella caminan a una de las clases generales que necesitan para cumplir los requisitos de cultura en UC Davis: lingüística española, con el profesor Bradley. Keilani e Irene están emocionadas y se sientan en la primera fila del salón. La clase está llena de estudiantes.

Después de clase, Keilani e Irene tienen una hora de descanso y toman un café en el MU.

That class seems really interesting! My family is from the Phillipines and some of my family members are Spanish. I don’t know much about the history and language of that part of my culture, but I am excited to learn more. The professor seems really nice too! -dice Keilani.
He does seem like he will be a great professor! Oh, and by the way, I am from Madrid, so I would be happy to share with you more about the Spanish culture. Hey, you said something about an apartment you were defrauded out of … Can you tell me more about that? - pregunta Irene.
I made an appointment with an apartment owner to look at an apartment yesterday off of E street. The owners had posted photos to Facebook saying it cost $1,000 a month. I sent them a deposit for that same amount via Western Union. I texted the owner and he said I could come by at 6pm. When I went by, the address was for a store! I contacted him various times, but he never responded.

Irene cuenta a Keilani sobre la estafa y le muestra el anuncio de Facebook. Irene le dice que su amiga Marcela recibió un mensaje de los estafadores a través de un anuncio falso que ellas pusieron en el muro de “UC Davis off – Campus Housing”.

Marcela is going to meet with the owners and take pictures of them. That way we can file a police report right away!
Great idea! Can we go with her? - pregunta Keilani.
I think we can! I will contact her now to see if we can arrange a meeting this evening.

Irene y Keilani compran sus cafés en MU y salen al patio. En el patio ven a un chico beber cava, una bebida similar al champán. <<Qué raro>>, piensa Irene. Las clases de Irene y Keilani no terminan hasta las cuatro y media de la tarde. Irene manda un mensaje a Marcela:

¿Podemos ir contigo a la cita con los estafadores a las seis de la noche? Tenemos clase hasta las cinco y media - escribe Irene.
¡Qué lástima! Los estafadores solo pueden reunirse a las dos en punto de la tarde. No se preocupen. Yo sí puedo quedar con ellos. ¡Voy a tomar fotos de ellos! - responde Marcela.
