Consistent practice is the only way to build aural skills. Ear training is not the kind of class where you can leave practicing and preparation to the night before an exam. Use these activities to guide your practice time each day.
Kahoot!
Use this QR code to access a Kahoot! that practices cadential 6/4, pedal 6/4, ascending passing 6/4, and descending passing 6/4 chords.
Tone Savvy
This website provides a variety of ear training activities, including chord progressions. You can access Practice Exercises>Chord Progressions and choose which chords you would like included. These progressions are all in root position.
Apps
These apps have been mentioned in previous chapters, but would continue to be valuable practice for the concepts in this chapter.
Perfect Ear
This free app also has a "Chord Progression" exercise under the Ear Training activities. To practice hearing both the subdominant (IV) and supertonic (ii) chords, choose the one titled, "Subdominant and supertonic." This app also uses the minor tonic and is good practice continuing to work on hearing the difference between major and minor chords.
There are other chord exercises in this app that you might also find useful if you haven't already used these activities for practice:
- Plagal and authentic cadences
- IV-V-I cadences
Additional Practicing Ideas
- Find another music student and practice together. Write out your own harmonic progressions and include second inversion chords.
- Find a simple piece of popular music and see if you can notate the bass line and the soprano line. Search online for the sheet music to check your work.
