A double period occurs when there are four phrases that each end in cadences, but the first three cadences are considered to be weak. These are phrases that are essentially grouped together, but do not form a two-phrase period due to the cadences.
We can also describe double periods with the terms parallel and contrasting. In this case, this shows the form for a parallel double period. Each of the pairs of phrases is starting with the same material since they are both marked with the lowercase letter "a." The return of the "b" phrase is different the second time since it is ending in a PAC instead of an IAC.
Three-Phrase Periods
Another form option that we may see is a group of three phrases that make up a period. Again, the first two phrases would have weaker cadences and the final phrase will have a strong cadence.
