    Composition of a Half-Diminished Seventh Chord (ø7)

    The half-diminished seventh is the chord that naturally occurs in a major key when we build a seventh chord on the seventh scale degree (starting on ti). These are stacked thirds that go up four notes.

    Intervals

    We can think of the half-diminished seventh chord as one of the following:

    • A diminished triad with a minor seventh (measured from the root of the chord to the top note of the chord)
    • A diminished triad with an added major third on top (measured from the fifth of the chord to the top note of the chord)
    • A seventh chord built on the seventh scale degree of a major scale (ti, re, fa, la).

    The Sound of the ø7

    The mix of a diminished triad and a minor seventh gives this chord a quality that sounds close, but also includes the stability of a major third.

    • The distance between the root and the seventh of this chord is a minor seventh. Comparing this sound with the fully diminished seventh chord, the distance from the root to the seventh sounds much farther apart.
    • Your ear might also be able to pick out the diminished triad.

    Bø7

    The Bø7 is a half-diminished seventh chord built on B. It would also be the viiø7 in the key of C major.
