    ¿Para qué sirve y cómo lo uso?

    The following information explains the use of the verb gustar and regular -er and -ir verbs all in the present tense. You will be able to conjugate these verbs and use gustar appropriately in a sentence to express what you and others like.

    1. Gustar means to like or to be pleasing.

    2. The sentence structure in Spanish to say “I like …” is different than in English.

    3. Instead the main subject of the sentence is the item being liked and the person doing the liking is an indirect object.

    4. English: I like x.

    Spanish: X is pleasing to me.

    1. Gustar uses indirect object pronouns and it is conjugated as either gusta for singular or gustan for plural.

    Me gusta la nieve.

    1. To emphasize who is liking something the phrase A + person is used.

    A mí me gusta la navidad.

    A ti no te gusta el invierno.

    A ella le gustan los cumpleaños.

    A nosotras nos gusta el sol. 

    A vosotros no os gustan los tenis.

    A ustedes les gustan los zapatos.

    A Enrique le gusta la primavera.

    A las estudiantes les gusta el buen tiempo.

    1. Using the verb gustar discuss what you like and don’t like about school.

    2. Using the verb gustar discuss what a family member likes about vacations.

    3. Use an -er verb talk about what you like to eat or drink.

    4. Use an -ir verb talk about something you did today.
