    ¿Para qué sirve y cómo lo uso?

    The following explanations and examples aid in understanding the gender of Spanish nouns. This will allow you to determine if they are masculine or feminine and will aid in determining what article must be used according to the number and gender of the noun. Finally, you will be able to understand how to make a word plural. 

    Gramática: Género

    Género

    Masculino

    Femenino

    Mas./Fem.

    1. Nouns are either masculine or feminine.

    2. Masculine endings:

    -o, -l, -r, -n, -e, -s,

    -ma, -pa

    3. Feminine endings:

    -a, -d, -ión, -dad -tad -tud -umbre, -z

    4. Some nouns change meaning with gender and some work for both.

    El ordenador= computer

    El papel= paper

    El libro= book

    Exceptions

    La foto= photo

    La piel= skin

    La mano= hand

    La casa= house

    La libertad= liberty 

    La excepción= exception

    La luz= light

    Exceptions

    El día= day

    El lápiz= pencil

    El clima= climate

    El papa= pope

    La papa= potato

    El músico= musician

    La música = music

    El/la estudiante= student

    El/la joven= young man or woman

    El/la atleta= athlete

    Indefinite Articles

    1. Nouns ending in a vowel add -s

    2. Nouns ending in a consonant, -y, and some with a stressed vowel add -es

    3. Nouns ending in -z and -ces

    4. Nouns ending in an unstressed vowel with a final -s have no change

    Libro > Libros

    Book > Books

     

    Color > Colores

    Color > Colors

    Rey > Reyes

    King > Kings

    Bebé > Bebés

    Baby > Babies

     

    Lápiz > Lápices

    Pencil > Pencils

     

    Tesis > Tesis

    Thesis> Theses 

    1. El, Los, La, Las

    They agree with the noun. Meaning The

    2. Can be used in nominalization (to create a noun from another type of word).

     

    El niño = the boy

    La niña = the girl

    Los días = the days

    Las semanas = the weeks

     

    Los ricos tienen todo.

    Rich people have everything.

    1. Un, Unos,

    Una, Unas

    They agree with the noun. Meaning A or An

    2. Unos and Unas also mean some.

    3. Un can also mean one as a single article.

     

    Un niño = a boy

    Una niña = a girl

    Unos días= some days

    Unas semanas= some weeks

     

    Tiene un lápiz y dos plumas.

    He has one pencil and two pens.
