    Foxe's Book of Martyrs

    A Digital Critical Edition

Welcome to the digital critical edition of John Foxe's Acts and Monuments or, as it is popularly known, the Book of Martyrs. In particular, this website will focus on the "Examination of Anne Askew", an individual chapter in Foxe's larger work. Our hope in annotating, analyzing, and making cultural connections within the original text is to put it in an accessible and useful context that will help readers better understand the circumstances of Anne Askew’s examination and execution.

This digital critical edition was compiled and written by senior humanistic studies majors and minors at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame: Emily Beam, Savannah Jackson, Gabrielle Neff, and Rebecca Strom (with edits and contributions by Dr. Laura Williamson). The edition was completed as part of a group project for an upper-level course in early modern literature.

Acts and Monuments is shared under a not declared license and was authored, remixed, and/or curated by LibreTexts.
