These grids are useful in showing how saturation functions. We see the contrast of saturation clearly as the middle intense color square is gradually neutralized with the addition of the same value gray.
Skills:
- Mixing colors with control strengthens a visual artist’s ability to determine color choice while helping increase general attentiveness for the non-artist
- Mastering saturation can allow the artist to utilize chromatic light in a composition to convey glowing and illuminated subjects.
Knowledge:
This assignment will also help you to see the potential of pure saturation contrast in a composition by limiting the appearance of other contrasts such as hue and value.
Task:
- Choose one luminous saturated hue for the center color (1)
- Mix a neutral gray of the same value (5)
- Paint out 1 and 5 on a scrap sheet of paper and wait for them to dry before checking with the value scale.
- Adjust if necessary.
- Mix three steps between (1) and (5), mixing more and more gray to the center color in order to drain out the saturation. (2, 3, 4)
- The grids should be one consistent value across the saturation levels.
- Technique: Each collage should be made with neatly glued, color aid paper and matted on a sheet of Bristol paper with a minimum of 1” border
- Application of color contrast: There is no hue change or value contrast, only pure saturation gradation, revealing the contrast of vivid -dull.
- Completion: All squares are painted according to given dimensions 1.5” each for 7x7”
