In order to write persuasively, a writer should choose a topic that is controversial and can be discussed from for or against positions. The writer should clearly take one side of the issue and support that position with reasons that include data, examples or quotations. The writer must also address the other side showing an understanding of the opposition and giving a response that satisfies those objections. All this is done with language that clearly signals support and opposition.
- An explanation of the issue
- A clear thesis statement taking a position
- Reasons for this position including concrete support
- A summary of the opposing arguments
- Rebuttal or response to the opposing arguments
- Signal words that clearly show support or opposition
- Concluding statements with a restatement of the thesis, summary and prediction or recommendation.
Objectives: By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
- Define an argumentative essay and its parts.
- Write introduction and conclusion paragraphs for an argumentative essay.
- Write a coherent thesis statement taking a clear position on a controversial topic.
- Provide adequate support for your position in body paragraphs.
- Address the opposing view of the controversial topic in the body paragraphs.
- Use transitional expressions to show support and disagreement.
- Use the entire writing process to write, edit, and revise an argumentative essay.
- Edit argumentative paragraphs for common errors in grammar, mechanics, and format.
