I decided to show it to my best friend, my parents, and my sister. They will be shown at different times since I didn’t want any opinions to affect the others decision or thoughts. I told them this was an assignment for my Writing 102 class and the video had a very moving message. I told them to pay attention to the persuasive message.
Questions asked:
How did you feel while watching this video?
Did you get the persuasive message? What is it?
Did you find any connection with you and any of the topics? If so, which one?
Was there any words that repeated? If so, did they make you think anything different about the topic being shown?
What emotional appeals does the video use?
My best friend Eva watched it and while the video was going you can tell the concern on her face. She also started crying and felt overwhelmed. This was her response:
“The video is emotional and eye opening. It shows the problems but also hope to a better future. It gives us answers to the problems that are in this world. We need to see the ugly, the harsh, to wake us up and to realize things aren’t right but we also need a solution and a way of getting out of these problems. We are all humans, we are all on this planet. We need to love each other! Together we are a lot stronger. The youth is standing up now more than ever. We need to listen! We have lost way too many lives from our own actions and if that doesn’t change, more will parish. I loved this video! It definitely opened by eyes to what is going on."
Then came my parents. As I observed them watching the video I could tell the concern in their face. I also saw a hint of sadness when they realized where the world could be heading if there is no change. This were their response to the questions above.
Mom: “I feel like we were in big trouble, especially if nothing is done now.”
Dad: “I am concerned for the future, we need to do more on the giving than receiving.”
Mom: “The message behind the video is that we have to pay more attention on how we do things because we don’t know the outcome of it. It could be good or bad, but now I’m seeing a lot of it is bad.”
Dad: “I think the message is to pay more attention to the planet for the future of the next generation and the world to come.”
Mom: “The part I felt most connected to was the equality of women and how we don’t have a voice. Growing up I was always silenced when I tried speaking out on any matter.”
Dad: “I felt most connected to the kids growing up in poverty. I didn’t have the resources I needed like them but a lot of smart kids come out of places like that.”
Mom and Dad: “The charts and numbers helped shape our idea of the video as well as letting us know how bad it is in the world through cause and effect and their topics”
Mom: “The emotional appeal I found most interesting was Malala's story because I couldn’t resist but to feel empathetic to the whole situation. Also, seeing the younger generation suffer so much and wanting to do something about it.”
Dad: “Floyd’s death was huge on visuals as well as Malala's story on women’s rights. When I saw the kids suffer, it was another eye opener and seeing the hole in the wall project was huge for me. It was an amazing project and so sweet of the man to do it!”
The last person on my list was my sister, Ilse. As she watched the video, she cried. She shook her head and looked in awe of the whole situation especially with the kids and poverty. This was her response to the questions.
1. “I wish I could sum up the video and the way it made me feel in one word, but I couldn’t just say one word and be done with it. It makes you feel like you are not doing enough. Powerless and brave at the same time. Upset, worried, and sad would be some other words to describe it.”
2. “The message that was the most persuasive I would say would be the “let’s get it done” attitude, we must act but act soon. Whether it be climate change, women’s rights, or poverty. The change must be done now instead of just looking through the glass door.”
3. “I did find a connection with the gender inequality topic because I lived through it. Nonetheless, it did not stop me from achieving what I wanted. I used that negativity as fuel to make sure other woman knew their voice mattered and that they were valuable.”
4. “One word that was repeated was “change” and the word change is insignificant unless we are willing to do and act on it. It makes you wonder if we are ever going to understand to do something!”
5. “The emotional appeal I recognized was fear, guilt, sadness, compassion, and willingness. Seeing the kids live in such poverty triggered those emotions since I’m a mom and I couldn’t imagine having kids in that state. The other one was climate change because it’s scary to think the world can turn into that.”
After reading everyone’s response I realized they had a lot of similarities. It made everyone realize that we need to do something in today’s world or else things will just keep going downhill. They also realized they had no idea these situations were as bad as they are. I didn’t really notice any differences, they were all in sync with their thoughts. I believe the message was definitely delivered and the producers did an excellent job at making known the issues we have going on right now.
