    The Introductory Paragraph

    We've already looked at some introductory paragraphs. Introductory paragraphs provide the reader with some background and a reason to read the essay before concluding with a thesis statement. Most introductory essays begin with a "hook" statement, or a statement designed just to catch the reader's attention. It should relate to the topic of the essay.

    Hook statements can be

    • shocking facts
    • interesting stories
    • important questions
    • statements about the topic in general

    Background information of the topic, problem, or idea being addressed provides the reader with context for the thesis statement and invests the reader in the information to follow. Background information can be

    • an overview of the problem--past, present, or both
    • information about the topic
    • a story leading to the thesis statement

    Exercise 8

    Read the following student samples of introductory paragraphs. Consider how each student begins the paragraph and what kind of background information the student provides. How are these introductory paragraphs similar? How are they different? Discuss with a partner and then answer the questions that follow.

    Example A:

    Recently, a classmate lost his cell phone and could not remember his mother’s phone number, as the numbers of everyone he knew were stored in his phone. Since he didn't have access to his mother's number, he had to go back to the school and ask the counselor to look it up. As a result, he missed his bus, all because he allowed his cell phone to think for him. Cell phones have become a part of us. They carry features like the contacts pages that are very useful in our lives, but sometimes we depend too much on these features. Technology has made our lives better in so many ways, but too much dependence on it can be disastrous.

    Example B:

    From traffic lights, to the electric iron, and even our phones, technology seems to be present everywhere and part of our everyday lives. There is no doubt that technology has impacted our lives in various ways. Before various forms of technology were invented, people had to make use of smoke, fire, and arrows for communication. They also used animals for transportation. The various uses of technology now are quite impressive, and their impacts in our lives are very noticeable. The three products of technology that have impacted our lives the most are computers, automobiles, and electronic appliances.
