In the Theogony, Hesiod tells of Gaea’s birth from the chasm of Chaos, as the first measure of order in the natal universe. To affirm her procreative role, she births Ouranos, the Greek version of the Sky God. The cosmic Mother appears in a number of other traditions, wearing a number of unique names, but functioning in a universal manner. The Mother governs human, animal and agricultural fertility, thus, is often depicted alongside animals in her role as “Mistress of the Animals.” In this capacity, she is identified with Artemis, who both protects animals and oversees their subsequent hunting. In her function as agricultural patron, she is identified with Demeter, who governs the harvest that feeds the population. In the natural order of fertility and life, she also governs death and represents the chthonic [THON-ik] elements most often affiliated with the Crone, or Hecate who governs the magical elements that transport the dead to the Underworld (a role later appropriated by Hermes).
