The twins, Hunahpu [Hū-NAH-pū] and Xbalanque [she-BAL-an-kay], also have a miraculous birth and conception, for that matter. Their mother, Blood Moon, the daughter of one of the Lords of Xibalba [she-BAL-bah] (the death-dealing gods who live in the even more deadly underworld of Xibalba), comes across a tree where two heads hang, one the future father of her children (Hun Hunahpu), and the other his brother (Vucub Hunahpu). The two heads were victims of the Lords of Xibalba, having failed their tests. Hun Hunahpu spits into the hand of Blood Moon, and she becomes pregnant with the Hero Twins. The boys are born immediately in peril and must use their wits, and the Jungian knowledge from their father and uncle’s failures to survive in a world that clearly wanted to kill them. Their own twin half-brothers, seen as a darker, more menacing version of the twins, offer the first challenge to their survival with their regular abuse of the younger twins. When the Hero Twins are old enough, they deceive their brothers into climbing trees, which are impossible to climb out of. Trapped, the older brothers transform into monkeys, bringing undeniable laughter to the twins and their grandmother. The efforts of the Hero Twins emphasize their ability to utilize inherited intelligence from their father and uncle to mete out justice and secure their own chances of survival. Unlike Loki or Coyote, those who receive embarrassing or deadly consequences from the Hero Twins have clearly earned it.
