The ¡HOLA! textbook was authored by Spanish professors Beatrice Tseng and Karla Lemari of Irvine Valley College (California, USA) with the goal of promoting equitable and accessible education for all students. As a Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) resource, this textbook removes financial barriers by providing students with immediate access to course materials from the first day of class. By eliminating cost‑related obstacles, it supports greater student retention, reduces withdrawal rates, and contributes to overall academic success.
¡HOLA! Spanish 1 is the first half of a comprehensive introductory Spanish sequence. It offers structured guidance and practice in the four foundational language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Each module includes thematic vocabulary, sequenced grammar instruction, numerous self‑assessment activities, open‑ended communicative tasks, scaffolded writing assignments, and curated videos and readings that highlight diverse aspects of life and culture throughout the Spanish‑speaking world.
