    "Gustar"

    You have already learned how to express likes and dislikes using the verb "gustar" (to please).

    Some reminders about "gustar":

    Gustar has some very particular characteristics.

    • The verb always requires an indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, nos, os, les) that will express who is being pleased.
    • The "something" being liked (i.e. doing the pleasing) actually will function as the subject of the verb gustar.
    • There can be an indirect object expressed in the sentence, this will work like a clarifier or intensifier.
    • At this level of Spanish, you will only use gustar in the 3rd person singular or plural: "gusta" or "gustan".

    Ejemplos

    Review the use of "gusta" (singular form) and "gustan" (plural form) in the examples below.

    With infinitives:

    A mí me gusta estudiar español. A nosotros, a nosotras nos gusta ver la tele.
    A ti te gusta ir a las tiendas y comprar ropa.        
    A Ud., a él, a ella le gusta nadar y practicar deportes. A Uds., a ellos, a ellas les gusta ir al cine y comer hamburguesas.

    With singular nouns:

    A mí me gusta esta clase. A nosotros, a nosotras nos gusta el fútbol.
    A ti te gusta el perro.        
    A Ud., a él, a ella le gusta la hamburguesa. A Uds,, a ellos, a ellas les gusta la ropa cómoda.

    With plural nouns:

    A mí me gustan estas clases. A nosotros, a nosotras nos gustan las empanadas de queso y jamón.
    A ti te gustan los chocolates de leche.        
    A Ud., a él, a ella le gustan los perros y los gatos. A Uds., a ellos, a ellas les gustan las hamburguesas con las papas fritas.

    To express dislike, the negative word “no” is placed before the indirect object pronouns. Review the examples paying special attention to the placement of the word "no" in blue.

    A Elsa y a Elena no les gusta estudiar.

    Verbs like "gustar"

    The following verbs (below) are conjugated like the verb "gustar".

    aburrir To bore aburre, aburren
    encantar To like a lot, to love (inanimate objects) encanta, encantan
    importar To be important to, to matter to, to mind importa, importan
    interesar To interest, to be interesting to interesa, interesan
    molestar To bother

    molesta, molestan
    parecer To seem parece, parecen
    sorprender To surprise sorprende, sorprenden

    Ejemplos

    • A Keiko le interesan las matemáticas.
    • Nos importa llegar a tiempo al trabajo y a la universidad.
    • A los niños les encantan los dulces.
    • A ti y a mí nos molesta esta música

    Actvidad 3: ¿Qué piensas?

    Paso 1: Lee la pregunta y pon una "x" si te describe.

    Ejemplo: Me gustan todos los tipos de música. X

    3. Me interesa estudiar la música clásica.

    4. Me aburre el jazz.

    Paso 2: Comparte tus respuestas con otra persona de la clase y después lxs dos van a escribir una frase siguiendo el modelo.

    A mí me gustan todos tipos de música pero a tí no te gustan; Te gusta el reguetón.

    Actividad 4

    Actividad 5 - El vendedor de humo

    Paso 1: Mira el video "El vendedor de Humo" (humo = smoke) y apunta lo que ocurre.

    Paso 2: Con dos otras personas en la clase, deben escribir por lo menos 6 frases describiendo las reacciones o las emociones de los personajes del cortrometraje. Hay que usar los verbos como gustar pero no se puede repetir los verbos.
