    La voz pasiva*

    In the active voice, both in English and in Spanish, a subject performs an action on a direct object. In the passive voice, the direct object functions as a subject, the action is received (be + past participle), and the agent (active subject), if mentioned, comes after the preposition by.

    Se pasivo

    The se pasivo allows the speaker to express that something is happening or has happened without expressing a definite subject. This structure is formed by using se + verb (conjugated in the 3rd person singular on plural as seen below.

    The use of the passive se may be translated in two different ways:

    • By using a truly passive sentence
      Se habla español
      Spanish is spoken
    • By making the sentence impersonal by using "one" or "they"
      Se necesita paciencia.
      Patience is needed. or One needs patience

    Aquí se habla español.
    Spanish is spoken here    		 No se puede viajar a otro país sin pasaporte.
    One cannot travel to a different country without a visa
    ¿Se vivía bien allí?

    Ya no se usa esa expresión
