Uses of imperfect tense

Below are the most common uses of the imperfect tense with examples. All verbs conjugated in the imperfect tense are in bold.

To describe habitual or repeated actions
- Nos levantábamos a las siete todos los días.
  We used to get up at seven every day.
To express age
- Carlitos tenía 5 años en esta foto.
  Carlitos was 5 years old in this photo.
To describe physical characteristics
- Lucía era alta y bonita. Y siempre tenía una sonrisa.
  Lucía was tall and pretty. And always had a smile.
To describe mental or emotional states
- Lucía era muy lista y trabajadora. Nunca estaba triste ni enojada.
  Lucía was very smart and hard-working. She was never sad nor angry.
To tell the time
- Era la una de la madrugada. Eran las once.
  It was one in the morning. It was eleven.
To describe the weather
- Era una noche de tempestad. Llovía y había relámpagos.
  It was a stormy night. It was raining and there were lightning.
To express events or actions that were occurring simultaneously
- Yo tomaba el café mientras escuchaba la música.
  I was drinking the coffee while listening to the music.
- Yo hacía la tarea mientras mi mamá preparaba la cena.
  I was doing the homework while my mom was preparing the dinner.
- Nosotros estábamos cantando la canción mientras ustedes estaban bailando al ritmo.
  We were singing the song while you were dancing to the rhythm

8. To express an activity that was in progress when something else happened

Estábamos cenando cuando alguien llegó a la puerta.
We were eating dinner when someone arrived at the door.
Servían la comida cuando se cayó el plato
They were serving the meal when the plate fell.

Paso 1: Con otra persona deben pensar en cinco preguntas que pueden hacer a otrxs compañerxs de clase sobre su juventud (youth). Pueden ser preguntas sobre sus pasatiempos, sus amigos, sus vacaciones, etc.

Ejemplo para empezar: ¿Dónde vivías cuando eras joven?

Paso 2: Cada persona debe tomar sus preguntas y hablar con otra persona en la clase. Cada persona en la pareja va a hacer las preguntas a su compañerx y después contestar las preguntas de la otra persona.

Paso 3: ¿Qué tienen en común? Escribe frases donde describen las similitudes.

Ejemplo: Nosotros tomábamos vacaciones en la playa.
