Observations
- The Spanish present progressive tense is used exclusively to emphasize that an action is in progress at the moment of speaking.
- It does not indicate the beginning or end of the action.
- Unlike its English counterpart (-ing verbs), it is not used to express future actions, only present. For future actions, it is more common to use the simple present: "mañana viajo a Madrid" or the ir + a form: "Mañana voy a ir a Madrid."
In the examples below, the present progressive conjugations are highlighted in blue and bold:
- Los señores Pérez están bailando Tango.
- Manuel está pidiendo una hamburguesa.
- Yo estoy abriendo mi regalo de cumpleaños.

Forming the Present Progressive
To form the Present Progressive, Spanish uses the present tense of the verb "estar" followed by a verb in the present participle: Estar + Present Participle.
