    Passatempi e tempo libero

In this section, you will explore how to talk about hobbies and free time in Italian. Through short videos and real-world examples, you will review regular verbs and discover common expressions used in everyday conversation.

    Let’s begin with you.

What are your favorite hobbies? Write a short list in English, then find the Italian equivalent for each activity.

Next, ask a classmate: “Cosa fai nel tempo libero?” Compare your answers and see whether you share any interests.

    Learning Objectives
    • Understand common vocabulary related to hobbies and free time activities.
    • Recognize and use regular verbs in the present tense when talking about daily activities.
    • Ask and answer questions about free time using expressions such as Cosa fai nel tempo libero? and Ti piace…?
    • Identify key information from an authentic video about hobbies and personal interests.
    • Compare and summarize classmates’ responses using numbers and frequency expressions (sempre, spesso, qualche volta, mai).
    • Write a short paragraph describing your own free time using complete sentences in Italian.

Easy Italian: Hobbies e tempo libero

You will now listen to authentic Italian speakers describing how they spend their free time. As you watch, focus first on understanding the main idea. Then, listen again to notice specific verbs, expressions, and pronunciation patterns.

Video: Cosa fai nel tempo libero?

Easy Italian – Learn to talk about your hobbies and free time. Lenght:5:11

Watch the video and listen to how Italians describe their free time activities.

Note: This video is for educational purposes. It plays twice:

    • The first part is without captions, so you can focus on listening and guessing meaning.
    • The second part includes Italian captions to support comprehension and reinforce vocabulary.

    Create Your Own Vocabulary List

    • Write down all the hobbies or activities you hear.
    • Add both common and unique activities that reflect your real life

    Examples
andare al cinema – to go to the movies
    leggere – to read
    ballare – to dance
giocare a calcio – to play soccer
ascoltare musica – to listen to music

    Compare Your List

Compare your new vocabulary list with your classmates

    1. Which ones are the same?
    2. Which ones are new?

Write two short lists to show your comparison.

    Example:

    Same: ascoltare musica, fare sport
    New: cucinare, viaggiare, disegnare

Writing Prompt – Il mio tempo libero

Write a short paragraph (5–6 sentences) about your free time.
Use at least three regular verbs in Italian and describe:

    • What activities you like or don’t like
    • When and with whom you do them
    • How often you do them

    Example:
Nel mio tempo libero ascolto la musica e guardo film.
Il fine settimana esco con gli amici e mangio la pizza.
Qualche volta leggo un libro o faccio una passeggiata nel parco.
    Mi piace rilassarmi la domenica.

Speaking Practice – Parla con un compagno

Ask a partner the following questions in Italian. Take turns asking and answering.
Write short notes about what your partner says.

    1. Che cosa ti piace fare nel tempo libero
    2. Quante volte alla settimana fai questa attività?
    3. Con chi fai questa attività?
    4. Quando fai questa attività?

Write short notes about each person’s answers.

    Write a Summary

Write a short paragraph (about 5–6 sentences) summarizing the results of your class survey. Include numbers and frequency expressions (sempre, spesso, qualche volta, mai) to make your summary more detailed.
    Follow the example below:

    Example:
Tre persone ascoltano spesso la musica. Due studenti fanno sempre sport. Quattro amici guardano qualche volta un film nel fine settimana.
