The Overall Assignment:
You and your group members will work on creating a Canvas page which provides analysis of various elements of your chosen poem and a video representation of that poem. You may choose any poem that was shared with the class during the poetry sharing or choose a poem which is located on this website: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/
Please note: I know that working with a group presents many challenges; however, it also offers many opportunities to increase your creativity, knowledge, and critical thinking skills, so please try to navigate the challenges of working with your team members. If you find that some of your team members are not participating, do your best to reach out to them and see if they may need some encouragement to join in. You can also reach out to me if they don’t seem to be responding to your messages.
Preparation for the Assignment:
Step 1— Individual Responsibilities
Please make sure to work together in order to evenly distribute the work for the assignment and choose the poem together. It is your responsibility to work with your group to make sure that you have a job to do. At the end of the assignment, you will be asked to submit a reflection assignment that explains how you contributed to the assignment. If you did not contribute a relatively equal amount of work, it will affect your grade.
Step 2— Communication
Each group will decide the best way for the group to communicate.
Step 3—Deadlines
Each group should decide on deadlines that work for the group. For example, your group may decide that you want to have everyone gather their information by a certain date and put it into a Google doc so that you all can provide input before putting it onto the Canvas page. Or maybe your group would rather just send all of their materials to one person who will be responsible for organizing them and putting them into the Canvas site. Whatever your group decides, make sure that you all agree on a deadline to have all of your materials done before the actual due date. That way, nobody is left wondering on the night it is due whether one of the group mates will complete their work.
Requirements for Your Canvas Page:
The purpose of your Canvas page is to provide information on your chosen poem. I have created a Canvas page for each group to edit as they build.
These are the minimum requirements for your Canvas page. You are welcome to do more than this, but in order to receive full credit on the assignment, your page should have at least these items.
The Video Representation (15 points):
- Your video representation should include the entire poem. You may decide to have the text visually appear in the video or it may be read aloud. If the text only appears on screen, make sure that your reader has enough time to read it before you move on to the next set of text.
- While the text is being seen or heard, there should be visual items that represent the language and imagery created by the text. When you break up the text for each video segment, keep in mind that a poem should be read without regard to line breaks, so break the poem at each piece of end punctuation whether it’s being read aloud or simply visible on the page.
The Analysis (25 points):
- 5 points: A brief overview of the message of the poem.
- 5 points: 3-5 sentences analyzing some of the dominant imagery and how it relates to the overall message of the poem
- 5 points: 3-5 sentences analyzing some of the figurative language and how it relates to the overall message of the poem
- 5 points: 3-5 sentences analyzing some of the sound elements(meter, rhyme, alliteration, consonance, assonance) and how they relate to the overall message of the poem
- 5 points: 3-5 sentences analyzing significant components related to the voice, form, the line, and the word choice/order/tone, and how they relate to the overall message of the poem. You do not necessarily need to analyze all of these, but choose a few important ones.
For your Canvas page, you are welcome to include additional elements besides those listed above. However, these are the required elements.
In addition to the Canvas Page, you will also need to complete the following items.
The Presentation to the Class (15 points): Be sure that each group member presents some part of the Canvas page.
Your Reflection (10 points): Submit your thoughts on how you and your group members worked together on this assignment.
Note: It is perfectly acceptable for you to consult other sources as you are creating your page, but if you choose to use any of the ideas, quotations, pictures, etc. from these sources on your page, please make sure that you cite them properly with an in-text citation as well as a Works Cited section at the end of your page.
