1. Who is telling this story? How do you know? Find passages that show who is telling the story.
2. What kind of narrator is this? Can we trust his impressions? Why or why not?
3. What is the effect of the narrator starting out the story by saying, “Among the Anishinaabeg on the road where I live, it is told how…”?
4. What do we know about the narrator’s father? Why is he like this? Find passages that help support your interpretations.
5. Do your feelings about the narrator’s father change as you discover his connection to the story being told in the first half of the story? Why or why not?
6. When the narrator describes his twin brother and sister, he comments, “Our story isn’t uncommon. But for us it helps to compare our points of view.” What do you think he means by this?
7. At the end of the story, how does the narrator reframe what happened to the sister with the plaid shawl? How might reframing the story help his father?
