Domine, refugium factus es nobis
A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.
You, Lord, have been our abode throughout the generations.
Before the mountains were conceived,
before the earth and its life engendered,
from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
You turn mortals back into dust, saying,
“Children of Adam, return!”
For in Your sight a thousand years are like yesterday when it is past,
like a few hours of the night.
You carry them away like a flood;
they are like a dream,
like grass that that sprouts in the morning—
that sprouts and grows anew—
but by evening is cut down and withers.
For we are consumed by Your wrath
and terrified by Your raging.
You have set our iniquities before You,
our secret sins in the light of your Face.
For all of our days dwindle away under Your wrath;
our years fade away like a sigh.
Seventy years may be given us;
eighty, if we are strong.
But even the best of them are toil and trouble;
quickly they pass, and then we are gone.
Who can comprehend the power of Your ire?
Your rage equals the fear that is Your due.
So teach us to number our days,
that our hearts may get wise.
Return, Lord, how long?
Have pity on Your servants!
Satisfy us early with Your loyal love
so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
As many days as You have afflicted us, make us glad;
as many years as we have seen evil.
Let Your servants see Your work,
Your children Your splendor.
And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us;
establish the work of our hands;
yes, the work of our hands, establish it.
Everlasting Father, our perpetual abode, we bear mortality within us, and the witness of our sin; yet in Your Son You have showered us with abiding grace. For His sake establish the work of our hands until He comes to gladden our hearts forever; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
