Quemadmodum desiderat cervus
To the Chief Musician. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah.
As a deer pants for water brooks,
so pant I, God, for You.
I thirst for God, for the living God.
When can I come and appear before Him?
Day and night, my tears have been my food,
while they say to me continually,
“Where is your God?”
I remember, as I weep,
how I went with the throng
in procession to the house of God,
a multitude keeping festival
with shouts of thankful joy.
So why am I so cast down?
Why this tumult within me?
Hope, I must, in God,
for I will again praise Him
whose Presence saves.
I am cast down,
So I will remember you here
where the Jordan begins,
the heights of Hermon—Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep at the thunder of your cataracts;
all your waves and billows have gone over me.
The Lord will command His loyal love by day,
at night His song shall be with me,
a prayer to the God of my life.
I will say to God, my rock,
“Why have You forgotten me?
Why must I go about in mourning
because my enemies oppress me?”
Their taunts break my bones,
while they say to me continually,
“Where is your God?”
So why am I so cast down?
Why this tumult within me?
Hope, I must, in God,
for I will again praise Him
whose Presence saves.
Living God, You made us pant for life in You and have given us Your Word and Sacraments to satisfy our longing in the face of those who would mock Your loyal love. Be our hope and our rock until we join that multitude which keeps festival with thankful joy forever; through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
