Exspectans exspectavi Dominum
For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
With persistent expectation, I waited for the Lord,
and He stooped to me and listened to my cry.
He lifted me out of my slimy pit, my miry bog;
He set my feet on a rock,
gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
praise to our God.
Many will see and fear;
they will trust in the Lord.
Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
who does not turn to the proud,
or bow to lies.
Lord my God, many are the wonders you have done;
marvelous are Your plans for us;
You cannot be compared.
I would tell of Your acts,
yet they are more than can be told.
Sacrifice and offering You have not desired;
burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.
But You have given me open ears.
So I said, “Know this: I have come.
In the out-rolled scroll it is written of Me,
‘My God I delight to do Your will;
Your Instruction has captured My heart.’”
I have proclaimed the good news of vindication in the great assembly;
I have not restrained My lips, as You, Lord, well know.
I have not hidden Your vindication within My heart;
I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation;
I have not concealed Your loyal love and Your faithfulness from the great assembly.
Do not withhold, Lord, Your compassion from Me;
may Your mercy and truth always protect Me,
for innumerable evils surround Me;
my sins have overtaken Me, so I no longer can see;
they are more than the hairs of My head;
My heart fails Me.
Be pleased, Lord, to deliver Me;
hasten, Lord, to help Me.
May those who want to take My life be put to shame and humiliation;
may those who desire My demise be turned back in disgrace.
Let those who say to Me, “Aha! Aha!” be dismayed by their own shame.
But may all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
may those who love Your salvation continually say, “The Lord is great!”
But I am poor and needy;
may the Lord think of Me.
You are my help and My deliverer;
My God, do not delay.
Lord Jesus Christ, who delighted to do Your Father’s will, was obedient to death and proclaimed the good news of vindication to the living and the dead: be our help and our deliverer still, for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God forever. Amen.
