Quare fremuerunt gentes
Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth take their stand,
the rulers conspire against the Lord
and His Anointed, saying,
“Let us break free of Their chains,
cast off from us Their cords.”
The One enthroned in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
He will speak, then, to them in His wrath,
terrify them in His fury:
“I have installed My king on Zion, My holy mountain.”
I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:
He said to Me, “You are My Son;
today have I begotten You.
Ask Me, and I will give You the nations as Your inheritance,
the ends of the earth as Your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron,
dash them in pieces like pottery.”
Be wise, then, you kings;
Be warned, rulers of earth.
Serve the Lord in fear;
rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son, lest He be angry,
and you perish on the way,
for His wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.
Lord God, You gave the nations of the world as the inheritance of Your Son, who lives and reigns forever. Grant that all the world may willingly submit to His rule and serve Him in fear and in hope; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
