Welcome, and thank you for choosing this LibreText, an online textbook of world literature that covers the time period from earliest texts to c1651. In the “Professor’s Introductions” that precede each reading, you will find information to guide and enhance your understanding of the reading selections themselves. These introductions are based on close analysis of each of the readings presented here, and intensive scrutiny of the social and historical contexts from which they spring. Readings themselves are all from openly licensed and/or Public Domain sources.
The intention of this text is to replace expensive printed textbooks used for world literature surveys. As a student, feel free to access any or all of it, cost free, for your benefit, information, and educational success. If you are an instructor, please feel free to use any or all of these materials as you see fit, and if you teach outside the College of Southern Nevada, you can make your own copy of the book and then edit it to meet your students’ needs.
Whatever purpose you bring to your reading, my own aim is to offer you an easy-to-use, flexible alternative to a commercial printed textbook based on my belief that learning and teaching ought to be available to students from all demographics. Whether you are a student, professor, librarian, tutor, auditor, or have another role, I also encourage you to reach out to me at Email: Taz Rosenthal about any errors, inconsistencies, or areas of confusion that you encounter, and/or additions you would like to see made to either my “Professor’s Introductions,” or to the readings themselves.
