In Chapter 3, we explored how simple sentences contain one independent clause that has both a subject and a verb and expresses a complete idea. In Chapter 6, we explored how to create compound sentences by joining two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction. In this chapter, we will explore how to create a complex sentence.
As you go through the chapter, you will complete activities to help identify the differences between independent clauses and dependent clauses. You will also learn how to combine an independent clause and a dependent clause to make a complex sentence. This is an important writing skill to have because using complex sentences makes your writing more interesting and enjoyable for others to read. By the end of the chapter, you will be able to produce complex sentences, which will help you write more clearly and accurately as you complete course assignments or communicate with others at work or in the community.
