Students in this course come from many different backgrounds. Some students have taken writing courses in a language other than English. Some have taken English language courses in the US, and others have taken them in different countries. Some students learned how to write paragraphs using a writing process, and others have had different experiences with writing. As you go through the chapter, you will complete activities to help you describe paragraphs and the writing process. This will help you feel more confident about writing so that you can complete various writing activities in your daily life, such as completing assignments for academic courses, writing work emails, or communicating with others in the community.
Think about the ways that you use English in your daily life. When do you need to write something in English? For example, you may need to write emails to your supervisor or co-workers. If you have children, you may need to write messages to their teachers. Maybe you hope to find a job, and you want to write an application letter. Whatever the reason, take some time to reflect on what you do well and what you want to do better. You can write some ideas on the lines below. After you spend some time thinking about your writing experience and needs, share your ideas with a partner. Do you have similar or different needs for writing in English?
