Essential Questions to Consider
1. What are some examples of special occasion speeches that you have presented and/or have heard? What was some take-aways or things that resonated with you about the speech? Why do you think that?
2. What key elements are essential for the success of presenting a special occasion speech?
3. What are some techniques that a speaker should use in presenting a special occasion speech? Do the techniques differ among the various types of special occasion speeches? If so, how?
Critical Thinking Activities
1. Listed are a few types of special occasion speeches.
a. Eulogy
b. Accepting an award
c. Presenting an award
d. Commemoration of a person or event
e. Wedding Toast
f. A graduation speech
Think about one of the above special occasion speeches that you have heard. Critique the speaker that gave the special occasion speech. What were the strong points of the presentation? The area(s) that you considered needed improving? Why do you feel this way? Give reason(s) as to why you decided critiqued the special occasion speech as you did.
2. Think about preparing for a special occasion speech. You might want to go on YouTube to find samples of special occasion speeches. You will need to specify a type of special occasion speech. Additionally, you can, in preparation for the special occasion speech, attend an event that warrants an individual to present a special occasion speech. Answer the following:
a. How would you describe the speaker that gave the special occasion speech?
b. How effective was the special occasion speech that you observed? Did the speaker’s speech fit the occasion? Why or why not? How would you rate this special occasion speech?
