    Lead the discussion by first asking students what they think ethics means. After hearing their definitions in their own words, explain the definition from the book: “the branch of philosophy that involves determinations of what is right and moral.”

    Then ask who and what they think determines ethical standards. Write their answers on the board. It can be helpful to put the answers into categories. Having the list of demographic characteristics from chapter 2 (age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, religion, group affiliation, region, occupation, socio-economic level, sexual orientation, and family status) handy can help with this discussion as well because how we identify ourselves can determine our ethical standards. It is important to lead them to be as specific as possible. There are many different levels to what determines our ethical standards. They can change according to geography and in different settings and groups. Ethical standards change in different parts of countries and even cities. They are very different in a library than they are at a boxing match. Getting students to think critically about how fluid ethical standards can be is important when they think about how to tailor their speeches to different audiences at different times. 

    Next place them into groups of 3-4. Give them 15 minutes to write 5 ethical standards for this speech class. In order to practice the skill of public speaking, students need to feel that they are in a safe place. If the class has an understanding of what everyone else wants respected, it can help ease performance apprehension. After they have compiled their list, each group should present what they came up with. Each member of the group should present at least one of the standards.
