Lead a discussion about identity using the reading above.
Begin by asking the class for ideas about what makes up a person's identity. Write them on the board. Ask questions that lead them to the list that the book provides for demographic characteristics: age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, religion, group affiliation, region, occupation, socio-economic level, sexual orientation, and family status.
Explore all of the parts of each demographic. For example, a regional identification could be midwesterner and it could also be a southsider from Chicago.
In class, have students write down three things that they most identify as. Have the students present the three things they wrote down to the class. Explain that this is their audience for the semester and that they now have a better understanding of who they will need to cater their messages to.
