Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the steps to take in order to pursue a degree
in elementary education.
Central Idea: Pursuing an elementary education degree is a career in education that
requires a person to select a college or university, select a concentration of
focus and prepare for the state certification tests.
Pursuing an Elementary Education Degree
[Introduction]
I. Teachers are in high demand in this country. Pursuing an elementary education degree is one choice that college students can make to help educate the American population. In order to prepare for a career in elementary education, a person must go through the following steps.
A. You may begin the pursuit of a teaching degree by selecting a college or university.
B. Next, you must decide on a concentration you would like to pursue.
C. After deciding the college or university and the concentration you want to pursue, you must prepare to take the state required examinations.

II. You may begin by selecting a college or university with the elementary education program.
A. Chicago State University
1. It is located on the far South Side of Chicago.
2. The university has a history for preparing students for positions in elementary education.
3. According to the university’s website, Chicago State University is recommended for continued accreditation by the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education.
B. National-Louis University
1. It has five campuses in Illinois, one in Tampa, Florida and the other campus located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
2. According to the university’s website, the university is known as a “teacher of teachers” and has conferred more education degrees than any other university in Illinois.

III. Elementary education has high needs for teachers in literacy, mathematics, and special education.
A. Literacy
1. According to Otaiba, et.al., there is a major concern for preparing children to read on grade level at the elementary school level.
2. African Americans and Hispanics score lower in reading standardized tests than their counterparts.
B. Mathematics
1. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) stated that opportunities in math have been limited for students in high-poverty schools.
2. Mathematics is the other subject area in which students tend to score low in high-poverty areas.
C. Special Education
1. More children are being born with issues that will require them to be placed in special education program.
2. Special education programs are growing but have a shortage of teachers to fill them.

IV. There are at least three exams you must prepare for to take the state certification examinations.
A. Candidates must take the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP)
B. The Basic Skills Test
C. Content-Area Tests

E. Candidates must take the examination of choice according to the, concentration, coursework and credit hours obtained.
