As mentioned above, the First Amendment essentially forbids government censorship of ideas or information in the United States.
Some famous examples of this type of censorship come from the Nazi suppression and destruction of ideas, works, and information in the 1930s. Works that didn’t align with Nazi values were considered “un-German,” and works by Jewish, leftist, liberal, American, Black, LGBTQ+ authors, artists, and more were confiscated and often destroyed.
Thousands of books were burned in May 1933, inspiring protests by important authors, artists, and activists in the United States using the First Amendment as their platform. The 1937 “Degenerate Art” exhibit showed over 600 works that had been removed from publicly-accessible German museums because their contents, style, and/or creators were “un-German.” This particular act of censorship and Nazi propaganda was intended to make an example of the supposed ignorance and lack of refined culture of “degenerate” art and artists. Ironically, however, people lined up around the block to see the exhibit, and over a million saw it in its first six weeks. Clearly it is still an important historical touchpoint.
