The basic definition for “meme” refers to them as cultural artifacts and ideas that are imitated, altered, remixed, or reproduced and passed along; they have been used in communication since the beginnings of writing through pictographic symbols (Benveniste). Similarly to emojis, memes communicate quickly and effectively. According to journalist Alexis Benveniste, “the popular meme creator Saint Hoax, who has three million Instagram followers, defines a meme as a piece of media that is repurposed to deliver a cultural, social or political expression, mainly through humor” (ibid).
