Researchers don’t agree on an exact definition, partly because it is a relatively new field, and also because it’s evolving so quickly; big data touches every part of our lives and is changing the ways we live. Generally speaking, “big data” refers to the information footprints we leave everywhere online, from data about our search habits to personal health information, as well as the underlying technology, machine learning (AI), data collection and processing, economy, and scholarship that is part of it and builds on it.
Like everything else, there are pros and cons related to big data. Ethical production, collection, management, analysis, and use of data are all important aspects of the issue that we should be concerned with, particularly when it comes to how it affects us personally.
Data is everywhere online. Internet cookies are pieces of data that are automatically created when you access a network or site, and that can identify you and record your engagement with online content. Consider all of the times you’ve been asked if you will allow cookies when visiting a new website, or if you would like to save your username on a login page. The digital trail you create with cookies is one of the ways that search engines like Google try to make your browsing experience better and how websites and companies track usage for their own purposes. Essentially, these pieces of information become a commodity in the digital economy, and the basis for the success of technology, organizations, products and media, and more. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this; the most important thing is to be aware of how it affects you, and how you choose to deal with it.
