Other modules in this text touch on issues related to how we engage with information in our lives; this one will focus on engagement with information through a lens of social and societal contexts.
We communicate with each other through various means and media, increasingly through digital avenues. The use and spread of information using different technologies has evolved along with our culture, ever since information was first recorded by early humans in prehistoric times. In the last several decades information has become vastly more mobile and even more widely-shared through the use of digital technology.
Technology can make information more accessible, allowing more people to share and access information more easily, but it also magnifies inequities and introduces information literacy and privacy concerns that didn’t exist before. With this in mind, it is important to be aware of the privilege and power that certain groups, organizations, and people have in relation to others in this larger social context.
