This particular world's fair in Chicago was dubbed the 'World's Columbian Exposition' in honor of Christopher Columbus and the 400th anniversary of what at that time was typically regarded as his 'discovery of America" or the "New World' in 1492, despite the fact that Indigenous people have been inhabiting the Americas (often referred to as Turtle Island) from time immemorial.

- In this chapter, you will explore some visual and textual primary sources made in the context of this spectacle and consider what messages and values were communicated to the original fair-goers through the exhibit spaces and designs. You will also review some secondary sources to shed light on aspects of the fair that challenged the dominant narrative being conveyed to the predominantly white audience.

- 1.2: A Close Look at the 1893 World's Fair - Classroom Activity
- This is a general outline for small group discussions where students build on what they read about the 1893 Chicago World's Fair for homework by perusing photographs and looking for visual evidence of the fair organizers' values and understanding of the world around them. In considering what they notice from that visual evidence along with the critiques students read and heard about in the assigned readings, student groups will offer recommendations that would have improved the fair.
