    Reading the Internet | Classroom Activity | Teddy's Build-A-Meme Workshop

    How To Use This Material [Instructor Note]

    • This class activity is meant to compliment the reading “‘OK Boomer’: Internet Memes as Consciousness Building” by Morgan Anderson & Gabriel Keehn, aimed at helping students realize the social/cultural/political power of memes through hands-on experience, as well as remind them of their power within social media advocacy apparatuses
    • The activity was designed in Slides; a link can be found here, and screenshots are shared below. The opening slides are a recap of the general argument in “OK Boomer,” intended to help students remember some of the core ideas of the reading; the activity itself can be found on slides 4-5
    • You should assign each student group a ‘topic’ to focus on (for instance: college/education, work/labor, taxes, social media, video games, internet ads, healthcare, etc.)
      • I’ve found this goes a long way to ensure students stay on track during the activity, but will also occasionally allow the groups to come up with their own topic (usually give them 2 minutes max to do so, to ensure it doesn’t take up too much class time)
    • Tech note: I typically use imgflip’s meme generator, but there are plenty of other free options available on the web as well; at least one student in each group will need computer access
    • You are welcome to make a copy of this material to edit and remix as you wish; please be sure to follow the CC license mandates when doing so
