    Reading Disney | Assessment | Exploring Childhood Ideologies

    Children’s media—by nature of the intended audience—is often thought of in somewhat neutral, apolitical terms. However, as we’ve been exploring this week, the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. As Henry A. Giroux and Grace Pollock remind, Disney—and media companies like it—act as a kind of “teaching machine” (xiv), and serve as “primary sites at which education takes place for the vast majority of young people and adults” (1). In other words, while the age-appropriate media we interact and engage with as children might not be, say, actively ascribing us to a certain political party, that is not to say that they aren't offering more general ideological lessons, lessons around self-making, around gender, around sexuality, around capitalism, and a whole host of other ideological positions.

    For your discussion board this week, I’d like you to reflect on a children’s show/movie from your youth, be it from Disney or another major purveyor. What ideologies, politics, world-views, and value-systems does the show upheld? How does the program explore and present these ideas? How, in other words, did a program from your childhood perhaps shape the values, attributes, and perspectives you hold today?

    Your post should be at least 250 words, and, if possible, contain a link to your example (like, say, the clip of the movie trailer or scene, the image of the ad, the Youtube of the song).
