We often experience digital technologies as a given, not thinking all too much about the ‘who’,’ ‘what,’ ‘why,’ and ‘where’s’ behind it all; in this chapter, we will explore these ‘hidden costs’ of the digital—from human rights violations to environmental concerns—as well as what we can do to change such practices.
- 11.1: “Digital Costs - An Introduction to Study” | J. F. Lindsay
- A multi-media reading from J. F. Lindsay which introduces a handful of pressing digital rights concerns, from cobalt mining to data mining.
- 11.2: Digital Costs - Classroom Activity
- ‘Digital Underbellies: An Investigative Report’ - a small-group activity where students cosplay as investigative reporters, researching and putting together a brief presentation on a pressing ‘hidden’ issue of tech.
- 11.3: Digital Costs - Assessment
- ‘Exploring Digital Life Cycles’ - a guided short-response assignment which has students trace the life cycle of a chosen media artifact in an effort to better understand how an important technology in their lives came to be, as well as what will come once they’re done with it.
