- Step One: Look and Think
- Explore contemporary Indigenous artists Wendy Red Star (Apsáalooke (Crow)) https://smarthistory.org/wendy-red-star-1880-crow-peace-delegation/ ) and Will Wilson’s (Diné (Citizen of the Navajo Nation) (https://smarthistory.org/will-wilson-critical-indigenous-photographic-exchange/ ) artistic responses to the pictorial legacy left by Anglo-American artists in the late 19th century (1800s) working on salvage anthropological projects, such as Edward Curtis.
- Consider what message or mood was conveyed to you in Curtis’ original photo and what message or mood was conveyed in these contemporary artists’ responses.
- Step Two: Create
- Make a copy of a photograph that pertains to you or your family. Add annotations—in any style you want—to the copy, like Wendy Red Star does in the work 1880 Crow Peace Delegation, to provide further insight into the subject(s) and event(s) being depicted.
