    At first glance, semiotics may seem like hoity-toity academia nonsense run amuck, but the semiotic frame is in fact a vital resource for making sense of the world around us and how we come to derive meaning from it; in this chapter, we will gain familiarity with the concept and practice utilizing it to analyze a wide variety of different mediated artifacts.

      A multimedia reading from Tom Streeter which introduces the concept of semiotics and provides terminology, frameworks, and examples for approaching semiotic analysis.
    • 3.2: Semiotics - Classroom Activity
      ‘Semiotics in the Round’ - a whole-class activity where students engage with a curated selection of mediated examples to gain comfortability with the semiotic frame, as well as discover what semiotic analysis can uncover for their critical engagement with media of all types and stripes.

      ‘Semiotics Here, There, Everywhere’ - a guided short-response assignment which has students solidify their understanding of semiotic terminology, as well as what the semiotic frame can unlock for their analytic abilities.
