Goal: To practice story-telling around a central theme
Activity:
- Use a deck of cards (ensure that each “deck” has an equal number of hearts, spades, clubs, and diamonds according to the size of the class for equal distribution).
- Each student will choose one card from the deck.
- Students will then organize themselves into groups of 4 such that each group has a heart, a spade, a club, or a diamond.
- Tell each student that they should create or compose a story from their experience around the theme indicated by their card. (Hearts = love; Clubs = Conflict & Resolution; Spades = Nothing to Something (Bottom to Top; Rags to Riches); Diamonds = Beauty or Community or Good News)
- Each student will first write their story as a series of notes and then they will share the story within their group.
- Those listening will take notes and discuss how the story connects to the overall theme.
- Each group will choose one student (with the best story) to share with the larger group.
