A quotation sandwich is one way to conceptualize how to seamlessly integrate direct quotations into an essay.
Basically, think of the direct quote to be added as the meat or veggie filling of a sandwich.
First layer of bread — Where is the quotation from?
Meat or vegetable filling — The actual quote in quotation marks
Second layer of bread — Why is this quotation important to the paper overall or a specific idea?
If you are wondering about that second layer of bread — the relevance, consider the following questions:
- Is it evidence to prove your point?
- Is it a supporting detail that adds to what you are saying?
- Does it repeat your idea in a more elegant or memorable way?
- Does it show that someone else who is an expert or a thinker in the field supports your idea?

Example of a Quotation Sandwich
In this example, I want to provide some documentation that Alsultany is concerned with minstrelsy.
Here’s my example of a quotation sandwich that will show up in my essay.
In “How the New ‘Aladdin’ stacks up against a Century of Hollywood Stereotyping,” Alsultany argues that the 2019 Aladdin improved upon the 1992 Aladdin by adding Middle Eastern actors to the casting, yet she also notes “that some white extras had their skin darkened during filming.” In other words, rather than hire Middle Eastern extras, Hollywood resorted to practices resembling blackface minstrelsy.
I will add this to my outline shortly.
